I have this tape right, you know, a cassette, one of those things we used to play music on in ‘Walkmans(men?)’ and ‘Boomboxes’ back when dinosaurs still roamed the earth. And in fact, there are dinosaurs on this tape - specifically Dinosaur Jr.
The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young (1988) is/was a compilation of Neil Young covers by a number of ‘alternative’ artists such as Sonic Youth, Pixies, Nick Cave and Dinosaur Jr. And what’s more important, it rocked, bigtime, it’s up there as one of the most formative albums of my youth…
Anyway, to the point. Apparently J Mascis and friends recorded two, not just the one track for the LP (Lotta Love made it on) and Lou Barlow recently unearthed (as one does in a dinosaur-context) a previously disregarded tape of a the second track (that never made it on the album): I’ve Been Waiting For You. Nice guy that he is, it’s now up for perusal via Slicing Up Eyeball’s SoundCloud page.
Lou Barlow had this to say on his Loobicore website:
"I found the cassette of this stuff while home for the holidays… it hasn’t aged well, not the condition of the tape (sounds whooshy + chewed), not the performance of ‘I’ve Been Waiting For You’… it ain’t great, but it’s RARE."
